In 1976 Richard E. Sellars founded a new cabinet company called Sahara Cabinets, Inc. In a rented building with used equipment and lots of innovation our shop was set up and running. We were profitable in the first year and began re-investing. An industrial site on Flint Drive in Fort Myers was acquired and construction of a 7,500 square foot building began. Over the years the original building was expanded twice to the current size of 28,000 square feet. Adjoining lots and two buildings were acquired and a fourth building was built to equal our current building size of 48,600 square feet on four acres of industrial property in Fort Myers.
A leader of innovation, Sahara Cabinets became the first in the County to produce the European Style of cabinetry. In the mid ‘80s. This style of cabinetry offers full access with 38% more storage space by eliminating face frames. The manufacturer of this style demands much more precision and material but lends itself to automation resulting in higher quality, consistency, and better productivity. The investment in high tech computer controlled equipment was essential. Today this style is the standard in our area and has been for years.
In the mid ‘90s a new cabinet door type called Thermofoil became very popular. This door type clad with rigid vinyl mimics frame and panel wood doors but is designed for extra durability for much less cost. In late 1999 Sahara Cabinets invested in machinery, software, and tooling and began production of these doors in early 2000.
In early 2006 Sahara Cabinets began fabricating solid surface countertops from the most recognized material brand Corian and from numerous other brands of equivalent material. This lifetime product is highly popular and durable and appears seamless and can be repaired and re-finished at any time. Utilizing CNC and Laser technology, solid surface products are fabricated in our fourth building, a new state of the art facility.
While Sahara Cabinets specializes in the European style of cabinetry, traditional wood cabinetry has become more in demand. Sahara Cabinets offers this product manufactured by Kraftmaid Cabinetry as well as other brands. Sahara Cabinets also has its own line of full access wood cabinetry by offering a full array of outsourced pre-finished wood doors from Conestoga Wood Specialties Corporation and other brands.
Utilizing sophisticated, state-of-the-art equipment, software, and material handling systems, our greatest strength is in manufacturing quality products at reasonable prices. We welcome dealers who purchase our products and perform their own installations. For the refacing industry we furnish a full array of thermofoil doors and accessories with quick turn around times. We also manufacture and install closets and garage storage cabinetry along with home office and entertainment centers.
